A touring exhibition of the personal and artistic archive of Poly Styrene; artist, punk icon and lead singer of the historic punk band X-Ray Spex.
Saturday 9 Nov | 12 noon – 8.00pm
The exhibition explores Poly Styrene’s complex legacy and work as an interdisciplinary artist, highlighting her experiences as a woman in music history, a woman in punk, being mixed race Black British, and someone living with mental health difficulties.
Celeste Bell (Poly’s daughter) presents a selected collection of artefacts for this special exhibition at #Louder2019. Celeste will also give an introductory talk to the exhibition at 12noon and again at 3pm, together with the opportunity to by related merchandise.
At 8.15pm, Celeste will be in conversation with Zoe Howe, talking all things Poly through their co-authored book Dayglo: the Poly Styrene Story (separate ticket required – please see https://tinyurl.com/y3fyvfcc) after which there will be a dedicated book signing with both authors and another opportunity to purchase Poly related merchandise.
The archive consists of personal artworks and documentation, including original drawings and sketches, album artwork drafts and final artworks, collages, personal and band (X-ray Spex) photography, original lyric pages, original promotional materials (label produced press releases, biographies), original press clippings, original band paraphernalia (stickers, pins, etc), peronsal notes and letters.
